Few would doubt that the year 2020 is shaping up to be one of the most consequential years in the history of the Unit States. The pressing issue of social justice and social healing has become central to the national discussion on race and racial inequality. BPOA has contributed to this discussion through our social justice and social healing Zoom conversations.
As an African American justice organizations, BPOA has an obligation to be a leading voice in defining a way forward on achieving social justice and social healing. Toward this aim, we will continue our social justice and social healing conversations which began Juneteenth in Los Angeles and moved forward with conversations with Alameda County Probation Department and Houston, Texas elected officials, educators and community-based organizations.
We are also aware of and have responded to the COVID 19 pandemic which has disproportionately impacted African Americans and Hispanic communities. We have initiated COVID 19 Acts of Kindness, an initiative that calls on us to embrace each other with care, concern, and kindness.
BPOA will announce shortly its third initiative, a department-wide mentoring project. The mentoring project will involve all employee classifications and will feature dedicated mentors and classes on promotional opportunities, skill-building and test and interview preparation.
We have undertaken a host of internal and external projects towards the aim of being of greater service to our members. One of these projects which we are very proud of is the implementation of our employee representative service- Civil Service Protection Team (CSPT). This team has delivered outstanding customer and performance service.
As we move forward, BPOA will continue to embrace a diverse membership that includes sworn and non-sworn and retirees. We will continue to monitor all practices which are harmful to our members. That said, we have much work to do and encourage you to join the movement, join the conversation and join BPOA.
